I'm a huge fan of Child's Reacher series, and I've read 16 so far... of which 61 Hours was easily the most disappointing. First, I knew instantly (on page 97) who the assassin was, and that's the first time that's ever happened to me with Child's work. Second, the author went way over the top with his expressed desire to put Reacher in a cold-weather environment, which manifests itself in repetitive descriptions of how cold it is. Third, the undercurrent of excitement common to the Reacher books is barely detectable here... the tension levels are relatively low and the pace is leisurely to the point of somnolence. And finally, while Child's books usually deliver a rich array of supporting characters, the only one in 61 Hours who feels both realistic and interesting is present in the story only as a voice on a phone.I'm glad I didn't read 61 Hours as my first exposure to Jack Reacher. There wouldn't have been a second. "61 Hours" is the second of Lee Childs' "Jack Reacher" novels that I've now read. (The first was "One Shot," the basis for the movie "JacK Reacher.") This is a fantastic book - another taut, tense, and extremely well-written thriller in the series about the former military cop who travels the United States and finds himself helping those who are in trouble.In "61 Hours," Jack Reacher finds himself stranded in a small South Dakota town in the middle of a severe winter storm. One of the town's residents, an elderly woman, had recently witnessed a murder and is ready to testify against the killer. Now her life is in danger from a Mexican drug kingpin who hired the killer. After checking Reacher out, the town's local police chief enlists his help in guarding the witness. Reacher agrees to help. Now he finds himself drawn into a highly dangerous situation involving a nearby prison, an old Cold War military base occupied by a mysterious group of people, and a hired killer who is targeting more than just the witness...I really enjoyed "61 Hours." Lee Childs did a masterful job of moving his story along at a brisk pace. Within the first few pages, I found "61 Hours" nearly impossible to put down.If the rest of the "Jack Reacher" series is this good, I'll be reading them all in short order. Most highly recommended.
